I RAN FOR KNESSET (Israeli Parliament) - what about YOU?

I had been involved in the Green Party in the U.S. for years, unfortunately the U.S. Green Party has become totally corrupted and anti-semitic. But the closest I came to an election was trudging door-to-door with campaign fliers for a schoolboard campaign, in which we won a seat in SF a few years ago. I also worked with NORML in Tucson, Arizona, and through NORML had the chance to lobby the public on referendum issues that affected my own privacy rights.

In Israel I have had much more opportunity to change things with the environment. If you take a peek at my Israeli Environmentalism tribe, you'll see we've had a modicum of success in preserving nature sites from massive development. I've become involved as well in the Green Leaf party, a party advocating environment and legalization of marijuana. Ale Yarok (Green Leaf in Hebrew) almost got into Knesset this year, and though I was only #14 on the party list, I was one of the few American citizens to have ever run for Israeli Parliament. During the course of our campaign and year-long activities, I have had the opportunity to lobby the public and work with the media on a grander scale than I ever even witnessed in the U.S. Feel free to join Ale Yarok's English forum:

One day, I will get in - and I will shake things up! I'd like to imagine that some of you are making change in the world and have a plan to seriously affect change on a larger level. If not, we are fucked! Do you want to trust to people like Dick Cheney to keep making the decisions? IF you don't step up to the plate, only more people like him will be elected. You know I speak the truth so get off your cushy couch and DO SOMETHING - NOW!! Report back at 08:00 with details of today's efforts.

ok, that was in fact funny
      • Well, I'm the Anti-Christ, so I prefer to work from behind the scenes. You know, offer comfort to people who should not be comforted, and discourage people who would otherwise create beautiful things.
        • rendall = thanatos AND medski, prove me wrong!

om, you are so cute. i'm really glad they're not making you sit in the back of the bus anymore, too.
          • Who me? No, I'm not medski. Where did he go?
            • i don't know. ask other michael. he knows. i think he might still have an alt in troll v troll. by the way, did you ever see the reuters interview of me in the spring?

Can you teach me how to be articulate like that?
                    • i recommend taking a public speaking course. i took a class on this in high school and it has served me very well, though if it was easily accessible, i would be very happy to take another. people like hillary clinton or al gore, who just didn't come off well when speaking publicly, have access to the most expensive and highly trained pr specialists. look at a video of hillary when she was first lady and now. i can't find a clip from her first lady years...but

ten years ago, she turned people off (she was too monotone, didn't smile enough and came off as a harsh person) - she's more impressive and likable today. here's a recent clip: www.grist.org/feature/200...n_factsheet/

their pr people are constantly giving them advice, so they are constantly improving. we don't have these advantages, but a public speaking course can be just as effective.

i can't teach you, no, and frankly, i have much to learn myself. but if you post a video of yourself making a short presentation on youtube, i'd be happy to give you feedback.

hehe, I was complimenting you. I wasn't really asking you to teach me. ;)

                        Good interview.

In all seriousness, I think I'm...like...pretty articulate...and stuff.
                          • i believe you. comes naturally to some. what are you doing with that gift?
                            • Unsu...

That was supposed to be manufactured irony.

But to answer your question. Nothing, absolutley nothing. I'm really not that great of a public speaker. As a matter of fact, I SUCK at it when I'm put on the spot.

I tried door to door canvassing for a environmental organization (Forests Forever) trying to get the Sequoia's out of the National Forest Service's authority and into the National Park Service, but I sounded like a bumbling idiot when I went to someone's door. It was an actual job though. I was being paid, and there was a quota. It felt like a sales job. We were told to read from a script which made me feel a bit insincere. I don't know why. i felt really uncomforable.
                              • well since we're admitting faults, clearly irony flies over my head and out the window as often as sarcasm. hehehe. a public speaking class would teach you to feel more comfortable with that.

i know exactly what you mean about the door-to-door canvassing though. in new brunswick, nj (when i was in college) many of my friends worked for PIRG. they tried to convince me to do it but i just could not bring myself to it - and i'm a die-hard environmentalist! but i preferred to work as a lifeguard and at the local tony's pizza. it's not just the script (thus lack of sincerity - agreed!) that bugs me, but how much of the money goes to the canvassers - makes me skeptical about any organization that would do that. here in israel, it's greenpeace hitting the streets for money. and what are they doing with it? good question. seems like they must be sending it abroad. the only large group working for the environment in israel is the society for the protection of nature in israel. bc of their canvassing i have lost all faith in greenpeace. sad. i did take the opportunity to jump on the rainbow warrior when it was at port in haifa though!
